Short answer

We repair and replace roofs across Tacoma's neighborhoods and the Pierce County towns around it, plus Federal Way and Auburn in south King County. Tacoma alone had 219,346 residents in 2020, and about 26.9% of its homes were built in 1939 or earlier, so older roofs make up a large share of our work.

Inside the city

Tacoma neighborhoods

Tacoma runs eight neighborhood councils, from the North End to the South End. These pages cover the parts of the city where roofs differ most: the pre-war North End and historic districts, the hilly Northeast, the 1970s to 1990s West End, and the South End and Eastside.

Cities and towns around Tacoma

West toward the Narrows, east up the valley to the plateau, and north along I-5. Each page covers the housing, weather exposure and permit office that apply there.

County pages

Counties we cover

Pierce County is home base. South King County is a short drive up I-5, and we take work in Thurston and Kitsap counties when the job and the schedule line up.

Permits

Who issues the roofing permit depends on the address

Inside Tacoma, a single-family or duplex reroof is exempt from a permit when the old roofing comes off, the new roofing weighs 2.5 lb per square foot or less, the framing stays the same and the building is not unreinforced masonry. Adding a layer over old roofing or changing the roofline is a different story, and homes in the North Slope and Wedge historic districts can need design review.

Outside city limits, in places like South Hill, Spanaway, Parkland, Graham and Frederickson, Pierce County rules apply: no building permit for a reroof on a home steeper than 2:12 when coverings total 7.5 lb per square foot or less, but replacing sheathing is not exempt. The City of Puyallup inspects sheathing replacement before it is covered and requires drip edge on every roof edge.

We check which office governs your address before the job is scheduled, and we confirm the current rules with that office. The reroof permit guide goes into more detail.

Travel

Where our coverage ends

Our schedule is built around Tacoma and the towns within a short drive of the Puyallup office. Federal Way and Auburn are regular stops. Gig Harbor, DuPont and the plateau towns are covered too, though a job there may be booked a little further out when storms keep us busy close to home.

If your town is not listed, call anyway. We will tell you straight whether we can get to it, and how soon.
